It has now been a full month since the #StopHateForProfit Campaign has begun and we at Rotate Watches went all in to join forces. In this span of time, the campaign continuously gained momentum as over 1000 companies and 200 nonprofits joined the cause. As a result of all of our joint effort and unwavering support, the campaign was able to uncover and put into the spotlight the numerous harmful flaws that Facebook continues to ignore for the sake of profit. Yet, there is still much more to be done.
First, let’s talk about the progress made by the campaign. As a result of companies and organizations big and small joining forces to say no to the promotion of hate, bigotry, racism, antisemitism, and violence, Facebook’s repeatedly used tactics to avoid taking responsibility are being cracked down on. Additionally, Zuckerberg and Sandberg recently had a meeting with various leaders of the campaign in which they talked about various conditions including the possibility of hiring someone for a civil rights position.
This all is a step towards the right direction but is still far from the end. This does not mean that the campaign was unsuccessful, as the main goal was not to do permanent damage to Facebook but to increase awareness. Since the campaign successfully gained traction, it is now more important than ever to push harder for change.
So how would we do that? The most important way to contribute is to continue to keep this issue relevant and to demand for change. The recommended next steps for the #StopHateForProfit can be found here.
Rotate Watch Kits will ensure that we keep this pressing issue in mind and strive to contribute the most we can for the cause. This change in Facebook policy and design is not a hard one to implement, especially for an innovative company. We hope that Mark Zuckerbeg will make the right decision and finally say no to allowing and profiting from hate.
